What is FIP?
WHAT IS FELINE INFECTIOUS PERITONITIS?
FIP is the second deadliest viral disease of cats and can be difficult to diagnose. Once signs appear, FIP is almost always fatal, usually within 6 months. Feline Infectious Peritonitis appears in two forms - "wet" (effusive) and "dry" (non-effusive). Symptoms that may appear include...
- abdominal swelling
- chronic fever
- diarrhea or constipation
- eye lesions
- jaundice
- loss of appetite
- neurologic abnormalities/loss of coordination
HOW IS FELINE INFECTIOUS PERITONITIS CONTRACTED?
FIP is primarily contracted by fecal matter and oral/nasal (saliva) contact with an infected cat. It can also be contracted with exposure to personal clothing.
PRECAUTIONS TO TAKE:
- Clean litter boxes at least once a day.
- Disinfect all litter boxes at least once a week.
- Change clothing after handling and cleaning up after any FIP infected or exposed cat before handling any healthy cats.
- Keep all exposed cats and/or FIP positive cats separate from otherwise healthy cats.
